Summary
Above Verona, to the south east and on the way to Soave lies the DOC appellation of Arcole. The region is still within the influence of Lake Garda to the west, which provides cooling evening breezes down the valley and combines with cooler nights to retain natural acidity. The silty and sandy soils result in low yields and a mineral character to the wines.
Winemaking
Hand harvested in the early morning to retain natural acidity. Primarily whole bunched pressed, aiming to limit skin contact and preserve elegance. Fermented in stainless steel with temperature control before maturation on lees for six months to build texture and complexity. A portion of Garganega (typically used in Soave) is blended to add delicate floral aromatics.
2010 Vintage
In the north east of Italy, white wines will be star of the 2010 vintage. After a cold winter and spring, a warm start to summer was stalled by a cool and rather wet August. This, whilst challenging for reds, allowed the white grapes to ripen gradually and develop beautiful high note aromatics. Cool Autumn nights led to the retention of natural mineral acidity. Whilst not blockbusters, the 2010 whites will be long remembered for their aromatics, finesse and elegance.
Tasting Note
Pale and delicate of colour with a fresh and vibrant nose showcasing lifted aromas of lemon, white peach and cut pear overlaid with delicate floral highlights. The palate is wonderfully pure and crisp with flavours of apple, citrus and white flower carried by a shimmering mineral backbone. The finish is long, dry and beautifully crisp – the perfect partner for delicate seafood.
